Anyone who is deciding to bring home a pet rabbit or who already has a rabbit as part of the family, should take into consideration the space the rabbit needs and the health and safety of the pet. While a great variety of single rabbit cages exist, if more than one rabbit is to be housed, then they must have at least a double rabbit hutch. Double pens are available for outside use in the backyard or indoors in places where weather extremes prevent having pet rabbits outdoors.
Indoor-Outdoor Double Hutch
A double rabbit hutch is a two-story structure and usually includes a lounging area for your pets. It is a good idea even for keeping one bunny, as rabbits are energetic and need space to run and jump. The hutches are available in natural wood or made from quality wood with finishes to match living room furniture.
Although spacious for a bunny, the double hutch does not take up much room and fits easily into a family room, recreation room or the living room. Although they can be placed outside in the backyard, a pet rabbit should not be isolated outdoors for long periods of time, as they are social creatures and need interaction with humans or other rabbits.
Required Living Space
Rabbit pens should have living space of at least four times the size of the rabbit, at a minimum. The pet needs to be able to move freely, and remember food and water bowls take up some of the space, as well. Be aware of the material the rabbit hutch is made from and ask if it is lead-free or if any toxins are in the finish or paint. Rabbits often nibble on their pen the same as they do on tree branches in the wild and toxins can be harmful to them.
Put a good layer of straw or shavings on the floor of the double rabbit hutch and keep it fresh with daily cleanings. Be sure the bunny has chew toys or something to shred, such as newspapers, old phone books or magazines to combat boredom. Give your bunny good care and lots of attention and you will have a wonderful, enjoyable pet.
